Protect your Home or Business
this storm season

Electricity is constantly flowing into your building, but it’s not constant. It fluctuates all the time, causing small surges through your expensive home appliances and devices. These items contain sensitive electronic components that are easily affected by power surges. Weather events like lightning strikes or fallen power lines can also cause damaging surges.

What is a power surge?

Standard voltage in Australian homes is 240 Volts. A power surge occurs when the voltage rises significantly above 240 volts for more than three nanoseconds (three billionths of a second) or more.

A transient overvoltage or surge is a short duration that increases the voltage measured between two or more conductors. They are derived from two forms: Lightning or Switching Events.

Lightning
If lightning strikes near a powerline, this can induce voltage that can easily travel down powerlines to board installations.
transcient
Switching events are caused by transients stored in electrical coils when switching on and off equipment.

Surge protection device

With the Hager SPD range, it is easy to select appropriate SPD products, from simple residential installations to large commercial buildings with multiple switchboards, that require a complex cascading surge protection system.

Lifetime indicator

Hager SPDs have their technical factors displayed on the front of the devices. Theses technical factors describe their operation to the device installer.

All Hager SPDs also include a lifetime indicator (as highlighted on image)This is a visual indication that the device is still operational and when it is near the end of its life and will need replacing.

Replacement Cartridge

Hager SPDs allow simple replacement of the cartridge rather than the entire product. The part number of the cartridge is displayed on the cartridge itself e.g., SPB040D as shown.

Risk Areas

Environmental consideration that may warrant an SPD: long overhead power supply lines, rural, large buildings & commercial installations.

Zone 1: High Risk Area

Install ‘Coarse’ surge protection and cascading ‘Medium’ and ‘Fine’ surge protection.

SPB165R recommended

SPA212A recommended for lightning protection.

Zone 2: Medium Risk Area

Install ‘Medium’ surge protection and additional cascaded 'Fine' protection for critical sub circuits.

SPB140D recommended

Zone 3: Lower Risk Area

Install ‘Medium’ surge protection and consider ‘Fine’ surge protection for protecting final circuits.

SPB140D recommended.
