Surge Protection
Type 1

Type 1 Lightning Current Arresters are designed for use at the origin of the electrical installation in the main switchboard, for high risk areas that have the probability of a direct lightning strike:
  • where the occurrence of the direct lightning strike to the overhead lines between the last pole and the entrance of the installation is to be taken into consideration.
  • or where the structure is equipped with lightning rods.

In order to ensure optimum protection, Type 1 Surge Protection Devices discharge very high currents to earth, providing the best possible peak voltage protection (Up) to the installation.

Characteristics

  • Tested with a 10/350 µs discharge current wave (Class I test) which simulates the lightning current produced on direct impact, according to the IEC 62305-4 and AS 1768 .
  • Impulse current (10/350µs), Imp - 12.5kA (Imax 100kA)
  • Visual indication: LED turns red when replacement is required
  • Employs spark gap technology
  • Must be used in conjunction with downstream Type 2 diverters

Cascading

A service entrance high current arrester, such as SPAx12A, will divert much of the peak to ground while cascaded Type 2 SPDs mounted on any distribution board will provide excellent attenuation of any remaining transient energy.
