Surge Protection
Type 2 Medium Protection

Type 2 Surge Arresters are designed for any of these instances:

  • distribution switch board located downstream from a Type 1 Lightning Current Arrester
  • at the origin of the electrical installation in the main switchboard, in areas where electromagnetic fields caused by lightning currents are dominant (excluding a direct strike)
  • for protection against switching overvoltages
Type 2 Surge Protection Devices discharge high currents to earth, preventing the spread of medium overvoltages (Up) in the electrical installation and protecting equipment that is connected to it.

All Type 2 Medium Protection SPDs have replaceable cartridges and a bi-directional connection. The three stage window arrangement provides an advanced warning that the device needs replacing. A remote indication option also provides an audible or visual alarm to the consumer that the SPD cartridges will soon require replacing.

Characteristics

  • Max. discharge current (8/20 µs), Imax – 65kA, 40kA & 15kA.
  • Tested with a 8/20 µs waveform (Class II test) which simulates the current produced in the event of a transient overvoltage on the distribution line or its vicinity, according to IEC 62305-4 and AS 1768
  • Employs metal oxide varistor (MOV) technology.
  • Base element and plug-in cartridge. The replacement cartridges allow simple replacement without the need to cut-off the power supply.
  • Visual indication, green to red, when replacement of the cartridge is required.
  • In case of premium ‘R’ catalogue reference, yellow indication on the cartridge and auxiliary contacts for remote signalling allows preventive maintenance.

Cascading

Using a medium current carrying capacity device, such as SPN1xx, will divert the bulk of the transient while a cascaded SPNx08D will divert the possible residual voltage.
